Just start writing

Writing is simple.

Like a lot of simple things, writing isn’t easy.

Just start writing.

I’m never as productive around the house as I am when I’m attempting to start writing. I’ll tidy my desk, do the dishes, vacuum the floors and go back to tidying my desk in a stunning display of procrastination.

Starting to write is daunting so here’s what I suggest.

  • Start a word or Google doc on your computer, or even the notes section on your phone.

  • As you read articles or carry out research jot down any thoughts you have.

  • After you eat dinner write a short article about the meal you just made.

  • You research and study anyway so why not start writing about it?

Write something. Every. Single. Day. : an Instagram post, a tweet, a recap of a task you did that day, notes on the book that you’re reading — anything.

Just start writing.

Writing is a muscle and if you don’t use it, you lose it. Not only will writing help you become a go-to person in your space but it is also a great way to organise your thoughts. For me, writing is how I learn faster than any other method.

There are 4 books I suggest that you read on writing. I’ve listed them in recommended order of reading:

  1. On Writing Well — Willian Zinsser

  2. Writing Tools — Roy Peter Clark

  3. The Elements of Style — E. B. White and William Strunk

  4. On Writing — Stephen King

For some reason the act of writing something makes it look like you know it better than the next guy (or girl, it’s 2023). I didn’t make up the rules, I just accept them and use them to my advantage.

Today. Write. Something. Anything. Don’t worry about grammar, a website, whether it gets any likes.
